- Sony’s PS5 was launched in the UK today.
- Delivery problems, order confusion and allegations of theft have resulted in a downright disastrous start.
- Theft of delivery trucks resulted in mail being canceled in one area.
Predicted as a day of excitement for aspiring PS5 owners, today’s launch in the UK turned sour quickly. Delivery chaos, confusion when ordering warehouse orders on the online start day and suspected cases of theft – today it was anything but smooth.
Launching in the US, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea on November 12th, the PS5 launches today for the rest of the world including the UK.
Fresh PS5 Stock Woes
On the order side, most retailers’ limited inventory was sold out in minutes, while others botched sales completely on launch day.
Retailer Curry’s PC World, in particular, launched pre-orders ahead of its scheduled 9am start, prompting it to close pre-orders and cancel all incoming orders. After the start was initially pushed back, The retailer placed pre-orders for todayMany were left empty-handed as stocks had long been snapped up elsewhere.
Similar to that first pre-orders in SeptemberRetailers like Argos, Tesco, John Lewis and GAME had technical issues on their respective websites with pages not loading and users queuing for hours just to get an “Out of Stock” message.
GAME and Yodel Buck Heads
For those with confirmed pre-orders who are excitedly waiting for a knock on the door, the situation proved equally probing. Especially with GAME customers. The retailer sent an email yesterday advising them of possible delays in orders expected to be delivered on the launch day. GAME blamed courier company Yodel for the limited inventory and size of the console. This triggered an exchange for the exchange between the two companies.
“For reasons beyond GAME’s control, Yodel announced today that not all of their deliverable orders will be delivered on the day of publication. This is due to capacity problems in their delivery network. “
Yodel released a statement shortly afterwardsto reject the claim and to blame GAME and its fulfillment partner GFS:
“Jodler doesn’t work directly with GAME. Our client is GFS, a fulfillment company that works with GAME. We have always been clear about the volume of orders we can handle for them and it is deeply disappointing that Yodel’s name was misused in an email to customers about the status of orders. There are currently no delays on our network and delivery capacity issues are a responsibility of GFS, not Yodel. “
Many who get their PS5 through Yodel will notice a tracking update Read “We’re sorry, your package has been reported missing. Please contact your shipper for your next steps.” Allegations of theft from Yodel employees.
According to a Twitter userMultiple van thefts have resulted in mail rounds in their area being canceled.
As you can imagine, many retailers have learned from the Xbox Series X / S launch this past week and have made the necessary arrangements for both pre-orders and deliveries to keep things running smoothly. This is clearly not the case.
