LONDON (AP) – The Duchess of Sussex announced that she had a miscarriage in July and personally shares the traumatic experience in hopes of helping others.
Former Meghan Markle and husband Prince Harry have an 18-month-old son, Archie.
Meghan described the miscarriage in an opinion piece in the New York Times on Wednesday. She wrote, “I knew when I clutched my firstborn child that I was losing my second.”
The 39-year-old duchess said she was telling her story to break the silence over an all-too-common tragedy.
“Losing a child means suffering an almost unbearable grief that is experienced by many but spoken of by few,” she wrote.
“By being invited to share our pain, we take the first steps towards healing together.”
In an astonishingly intimate account of her experience, the Duchess described how the tragedy occurred on “a morning that began as ordinarily as any other day: making breakfast. Feed the dogs. Take vitamins. Find the missing sock. Take the rogue pencil that rolled under the table. Throw my hair into a ponytail before getting my son out of his crib.
“After I changed his diaper, I felt a sharp cramp. I dropped to the floor with him in my arms and hummed a lullaby to keep us both calm. The happy melody was a stark contrast to my feeling that something was wrong. “
Later, she said, “She was lying in a hospital bed, holding my husband’s hand. I felt the moisture in his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both of our tears. I stared at the cold white walls and my eyes glazed over. I did trying to imagine how we would heal. “
Meghan, an American actress and star of the TV legal drama “Suits”, married Harry, a grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, in a lavish ceremony in Windsor Castle in May 2018. Their son was born the following year.
Earlier this year, the couple announced they were leaving their royal duties and moving to North America, citing the intolerable interference and racist attitudes of the British media. You recently bought a home in Santa Barbara, California.
