It’s been a slow and steady climb for the Walt Disney Company (DIS) Streaming platform at this year’s Emmys. Disney Plus had 14 wins at the TV Awards. This number is an improvement on last year’s record of eight wins.
The streaming platform had Disney’s list of 146 nominations that most for each studio at this year’s Emmys. The Mandalorian, a war of stars Spinoff, available for streaming on Disney Plus, was nominated in 24 categories, alongside Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) The crown. In the end there were seven wins. Wandavision, another Marvel Studios company, also added three Emmys to Disney Plus’ overall balance sheet.

The big winner of the evening was streaming pioneer Netflix. It garnered 44 wins – a record previously only achieved by CBS in 1974 – for its shows. Warner Media’s HBO finished second with 19 wins.

While streaming companies often spend huge sums of money building a package of programming for their platforms, not all of their content can stand out in a crowded carousel of viewer options. Disney is already a content powerhouse, but has still launched a slew of new programs for its streaming foray to attract new audiences. The company has announced that it will pump between $ 8 billion and $ 9 billion through 2024 to produce new content for Disney Plus. “The most effective way to grow our subscriber base is with great content,” Disney executive chairman Bob Iger told investors on a virtual webcast last year. Based on the number of wins at this year’s Emmys, Netflix is one step ahead among streaming platforms for high quality programming. But Disney is putting its considerable resources and creative skills to work on its streaming service. “Production values and talent for our streaming content, both in front of and behind the camera, are on par with our theatrical releases,” said Iger at the investor presentation. “The only difference between these films and ours is really the length.”
